Marcato
Effective 10 September 2026 · Applies to Marcato for Windows
Marcato collects nothing. There is no account, no telemetry, no advertising, and no data of yours is ever sent to Atenza — not while you use the app, and not when it crashes.
This page exists because the store requires one, and because a claim like that deserves the detail behind it. Below is what the app stores, where it stores it, and the only two situations in which it touches the internet.
There is no sign-up, no login, and no user identifier. Marcato contains no telemetry, no usage analytics, no automatic crash reporting, and no advertising. No third-party library serving any of those purposes is bundled in the app.
Atenza does not receive, and has no way to receive, what you read, the names of your files, their contents, or any usage statistic.
Everything Marcato stores lives on your machine, in your user's data folder: %APPDATA%\Atenza\Marcato
Three things live there:
marcato.sqlite) — the path, file name, title, size and dates of the Markdown files in the libraries you added, plus the text extracted from each document, which is what makes search instant. Your favourites, recent documents and open tabs are there too.The index is disposable: clearing it from Settings removes none of your files, and it rebuilds itself on the next scan.
Marcato is a reader. Reading, indexing and exporting are strictly read-only operations over your libraries: no code path in the app modifies, moves or deletes a .md file of yours. Exporting to PDF, Word, EPUB or MOBI creates a new file, wherever you point it, and leaves the original untouched.
Nothing is copied to any server. There is no sync, no cloud backup, and no file upload.
Marcato works entirely offline. There are only two situations in which it reaches the network, and both follow an action of yours:
Images hosted on the internet. If one of your documents references an image by http or https address, downloading it tells that image's server your IP address and the moment the document was opened. That is why the default behaviour is to ask first; you can change it to always load or never load, under Settings → Privacy. Images stored on your disk never go over the network.
Links opened in a browser. Clicking an external link inside a document asks for confirmation and, if you accept, hands the address to your system's default browser. From there the policy of the site you visited applies — Marcato does not follow along.
Outside those two, the app makes no connection at all: it does not check for updates, validate a licence, or send statistics.
So that opening several files at once gives you one window with several tabs — rather than several windows — Marcato listens on a local port at 127.0.0.1, your own computer's loopback address. The port is assigned by the system on each run and protected by a secret generated at that moment.
That connection never leaves the machine. If Windows Firewall asks about Marcato on first run, this is what it is asking about, and denying it does not stop the app from working: each file simply opens in a window of its own.
Marcato is sold through the Microsoft Store. The purchase, the payment and any refund are handled by Microsoft, under Microsoft's privacy policy. Atenza does not receive your payment details — only sales reports from Microsoft, which do not identify the buyer.
Marcato is not directed at children and, collecting no data at all, collects no data from children.
Data protection law — including Brazil's LGPD (Law 13.709/2018) and the GDPR — gives you the right to access, correct and erase personal data held about you. Because Atenza processes no personal data of yours through Marcato, there is nothing on our side to access, correct or erase: the data described in section 2 sits on your computer, under your control, and uninstalling the app offers to delete it.
Even so, if you have any question or request on this subject, write to contato@atenza.com.br.
If Marcato ever starts doing something this page does not describe, this page changes first, with the date at the top updated. No change will be retroactive.
